Zoom Meeting Usage Skyrockets: The New Normal

The Zoom Meeting Explosion

Newport highlights the inefficiencies of Zoom meetings during the pandemic era. While hybrid meetings with some participants online and others in-person are less effective, the bigger issue was the sheer quantity of Zoom meetings.

In the office, quick discussions could be had in just five minutes, but with Zoom, even brief conversations required scheduling a meeting, typically for a minimum of 30 minutes. This inflated the time spent on informal collaboration.

According to Microsoft data, there was a 252% increase in these meetings from 2020 onward, and the number continues to creep up. Newport believes this represents a significant amount of lost productivity, with time spent talking about work rather than actively working on things.
